A Man uses a Machete to Murder his Cousin in Lempira During an Argument.

What began as a family dispute ended in tragedy… and now two people have been arrested and one person is seriously injured.

A violent incident was reported this Wednesday in the community of Jacán , in the municipality of Gracias , department of Lempira, western Honduras, after a family fight ended with the death of a man at the hands of his own cousin, using a machete.

The victim was identified as Raimundo Sánchez Mejía , 42 years old, originally from and resident in the village of Jacán .

According to Wendy Molina, spokesperson for Police Department Unit 13, the crime arose after an argument motivated by personal enmity between family members.

“The manner of death was homicidal, with a machete-type knife. The motive remains personal enmity. This man had issues with his own family. During the fight, Raimundo also managed to stab his attackers, who then sought medical attention,” Molina explained.

Violent reaction left another injured

One of the cousins ​​involved, who also suffered serious injuries, remains hospitalized at the Juan Manuel Gálvez de Gracias Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention.

The identity of the injured man was not revealed, but it was confirmed that he was one of those directly involved in the fight.

Case investigation

The report was received through the 911 emergency line, which prompted the immediate dispatch of a patrol car to the scene. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that the victim no longer had vital signs.

After the discovery, coordination was carried out with the Police Investigation Directorate (DPI ) to carry out the respective removal of the body and the arrest of the suspects was carried out, identified as two men: one aged 24 and the other 63, both relatives of the deceased.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to fully clarify the events and confirm the circumstances surrounding this tragic family confrontation.

Homicides in Honduras

In January, 174 murders were recorded, 50 fewer than in the same month of 2024, according to the  National Police’s Online Statistical System .

However, the country continues to face significant challenges in terms of violence, remaining one of the  most violent in Central America.
