Olowookere was sentenced in 2010 and has served 14 years in prison, according to GuruTrends. He was 17 years old when he received his death sentence for stealing eggs and a chicken from a poultry farm in the state’s Odo-Otin Local Government in Oyan.
Adeleke stated in a post on his X handle on Tuesday, December 17, that he had directed the state commissioner of justice to investigate the situation.
“I have received the report of a case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl. As a result, I have instructed Osun State’s attorney general and commissioner for justice to launch a thorough investigation into the situation and start the procedures necessary to give the young man the prerogative of mercy.
“Osun is a land of justice and equity and must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives. I assure members of the public that this matter is receiving my direct attention with every sense of urgency also attached to our response to the matter,” he tweeted.
The governor instructed the state’s attorney general to look into the matter and make sure the man is pardoned before the end of this year, according to a statement earlier made by Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
The boy’s parents have been begging Governor Adeleke to pardon their son, claiming that the penalty is too severe.
Additionally, they have been pleading with Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, to step in and resolve the issue.
Segun’s parents were reportedly devastated because he is their only son.
The name of the judge who gave the boy the death sentence is unknown as of the time this report was filed.
