Alex Morgan has warned that Japan could pose a serious threat as the United States women’s team prepare for the SheBelieves Cup clash against them.
The USWNT hope to defend their SheBelieves Cup title heading into the tournament and they kick things off with a clash against the Asian nation. The two teams met in the previous final with the USWNT going on to win.
However, Morgan believes Japan could do some damage, telling reporters: “We’ve seen a lot of different ways that they could score goals. We used to play them a lot more than we actually have in the last couple of years, but they’re a quality team that will challenge us. This is going to be a great opportunity for us in preparation for the Olympics.”
The North Americans will also have to contend with one of Brazil and Canada in the four-team competition. The winner of the USWNT vs Japan clash will face either the South American country or the Canucks in the final.
The opener takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, and Morgan is excited to return to the city, adding: “We’re just excited to be in Atlanta. Not only for our Atlanta girlies here on the team, but also to get 45,000 and be playing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium… we’re looking forward to it. Especially with Atlanta being U.S. Soccer’s future home.”
Morgan has scored more goals against Japan than any other USA star and she will hope to build on that record when they go head-to-head on April 6 in Atlanta. The final will then be played on April 9 in Columbus, Ohio.
