WHAT HAPPENED?

Scott has been left “hurt” after being blamed for Football Focus suffering falling viewing figures, according to The Sun. It has been reported that the programme has lost a third of its viewers in four years and Scott is said to be considering her future due to feeling a “lack of support” from BBC bosses.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Scott has previously defended herself amid talk about viewing figures, posting on X in September 2023: “Thank you to everyone who tuned into Football Focus your support for such an iconic show means so much to everyone who works across it. Viewing figures double that of anything on TV at that time yesterday. Have a bless Sunday and See you at the Emirates you gunners.”

However, the former England star’s future now appears uncertain, as she is heading towards the end of her contract with the broadcaster. Scott has even been tipped to move across the Atlantic with partner Jess Glynne.

    WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

A source told The Sun: “She wants to concentrate on her ambassadorships with UNICEF and Refuge right now, and is also contemplating a move to America with her girlfriend, Jess [Glynne]. There are no guarantees she will be with the BBC next summer – her contract is up for renewal and she is in talks for a raft of other exciting projects.

“Football Focus turns 50 this year and Alex is now seriously contemplating moving on from the show. Last year she was hugely hurt by unfair criticism about falling viewing figures – and felt she was thrown under a bus. The viewing figures were not as reported and she feels no-one backed her up and issued the correct viewing figures. The viewing figures are actually super healthy, and Alex raised her concerns as she has been in this business long enough now to stand up for herself.”

    WHAT NEXT?

Scott is not the only BBC presenter facing an uncertain future. Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has been linked with an exit as the BBC look to usher in a “new era” and appeal more to a younger audience.
