Alleged Drug Trafficker Olvin Velásquez will be Extradited to the United States today.
Olvin Velásquez Maldonado, 39, was arrested on January 29 in Roatán, Bay Islands, in the Caribbean of Honduras.
Honduran authorities will extradite 39 -year-old Honduran Olvin Javier Velásquez Maldonado to the United States on Wednesday , accused of drug trafficking.
Velásquez Maldonado was arrested on January 29 in Roatán, Bay Islands, in the Honduran Caribbean. On February 18, a judge approved the extradition request filed by the Eastern District of Louisiana.
The Honduran man faces charges of “conspiracy to distribute five kilos or more of cocaine, with the intent, knowledge, and reasonable grounds to believe that such drugs would be unlawfully shipped to the United States.”
Until the day of his extradition, Velásquez has remained detained in the Marco Aurelio Soto National Penitentiary, in the village of Támara , located about 20 kilometers north of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.
From there, he will be transferred at noon under heavy police guard to the José Enrique Soto Cano air base in Palmerola, Comayagua, in the central region of the country, where he will be handed over to U.S. security agents, Javier Martínez, spokesman for the National Directorate of Special Forces, reported on Channel 5’s TN5 Matutino newscast.
Olvin Velásquez is the fourth Honduran extradited to the United States in 2025, according to Martínez.
Extraditions of Hondurans
Since 2014, Honduran authorities have extradited more than 50 citizens wanted by the United States, including former President Juan Orlando Hernández and former National Police Director Juan Carlos Bonilla.
Las extradiciones continuarán hasta enero de 2026, luego de que el gobierno de la presidenta Xiomara Castro suspendiera la denuncia que presentó en agosto de 2024 sobre el Tratado de Extradición con Estados Unidos, debido a presuntas injerencias de las autoridades norteamericanas.
Según el canciller Eduardo Enrique Reina, será el próximo gobierno de Honduras el encargado de decidir si continuará o no con los procesos de extradición.
