During the Morazan Week holiday, the Road and Transportation authorities reported a total of 97 traffic accidents as of Friday, which left 75 people injured.
According to authorities from the National Directorate of Roads and Transport (DNVT), drivers have shown excessive confidence behind the wheel, which has led to a lack of compliance with road safety regulations.
Although the figures are lower than last year’s holiday, traffic authorities are making a special appeal to motorcycle drivers, “who must take extreme precautions due to the rains that have increased the danger on the roads and, therefore, the number of accidents in recent days, according to DNVT officials.
The Honduran Institute of Land Transport (IHTT) has also stepped up its control operations by carrying out more than 7,000 alcohol tests.
Of these, 287 tested positive, according to Pedro Barahona, spokesman for the National Commission for the Prevention of Mass Mobilizations (Conapremm).
In addition, 538 driving licences and 7 public transport units have been confiscated.
