BREAKING: France promises retaliation if Trump attacks the European Union
Economically speaking, the American president has no interest in attacking the European Union.
“If our interests are hurt, we’ll react,” said French diplomatic chief Jean-Noël Barrot. “Who has an interest in a trade war between the United States and Europe? The Americans have a trade deficit with us, but it’s the exact opposite in terms of investments. Many American interests and companies are present in Europe,” he said in a recent interview with the French daily Ouest-France.
Jean-Noël Barrot felt that if the EU were to raise its tariffs, “American interests in Europe would be the big losers. The same goes for the American middle classes, who would see their purchasing power decline”. The head of diplomacy warns: “If our interests are hurt, we will react with an iron will.”
With Donald Trump threatening to impose heavy tariffs on Europeans, and expecting the EU to buy more American oil and gas, Jean-Noël Barrot was keen to set the record straight with Washington. “Everyone should be aware that Europe has decided to enforce fairness in trade. If we find abusive or unfair practices, we will retaliate.”
