Casemiro was torn to shreds after enduring a horrific first-half as Manchester United fell behind to Liverpool.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Luis Diaz scored twice in seven minutes to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford, with both goals resulting from mistakes by Casemiro. In the 37th minute, Casemiro’s attempted pass was intercepted by Ryan Gravenberch, leading to Diaz finishing off a cross from Mohamed Salah. Shortly after, Casemiro was easily shrugged off the ball by Casemiro and the ball was worked to Salah, who set up Diaz to score his second goal of the afternoon. The former Real Madrid midfielder was substituted at half-time, with Toby Collyer coming on for his Premier League debit.

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

@UtdEIIis wrote on X: “Casemiro is easily the worst player at the club he’s single handedly cost us this game.”

Meanwhile, @LyesBouzidi10 joked: “The football left Casemiro and then lapped him again”.

@AidanWalshMUFC attracted thousands of ‘likes’ when he wrote: “Like this tweet if Casemiro should retire today”.

“Casemiro needs to retire after today,” was @UTDTrey’s view, while @LiamPaulCanning wrote: “Another season of Casemiro giving the ball away for fun. Nowhere near good enough.”

@bethTmufc added: “Would rather play with 10 men than with Casemiro at this point he is an absolute liability.”

  • WHAT THE PUNDITS ARE SAYING

Speaking on Sky Sports, former United right-back Gary Neville said: “Casemiro, for a player with that much experience, the amount of times he gives the ball away in bad areas…”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Diaz was clinical but his goals were only possible thanks to Casemiro’s errors. For United, who have aspirations of competing again for the Premier League title, handing goals to your opponents isn’t going to cut it and the club’s supporters have every right to be frustrated with the midfielder, who was also a liability at times last season.

WHAT NEXT FOR CASEMIRO & MAN UTD?

Casemiro was urged by Jamie Carragher to quit top-level football earlier this year and the scrutiny will only heighten after this display. With Manuel Ugarte arriving on deadline day, it’s safe to say the 32-year-old’s days as a starter under Erik ten Hag appear numbered.
