Southampton’s match against Preston this evening has been postponed after a fire broke out next to St Mary’s stadium.
Fire crews are tackling the blaze which broke out just after 1pm this afternoon affecting four industrial units in Marine Parade,
It isn’t clear what caused the fire and a number of emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Southampton FC had been due to play Preston in the stadium this evening in the Championship, as the Saints continue their push towards promotion.
In a statement, the football club said that the fixture had to be postponed because the fire had caused “significant disruption” to the area.
They said the decision had been made after discussions with local authorities and emergency services and added: “We are grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL [English Football League], and while we appreciate the disappointment fans may feel, we hope they will understand the need to put the safety of supporters and staff of both clubs first.
“The game will be postponed to a new date, which will be announced in due course, and all tickets for tonight’s match will be valid for the rearranged fixture.”
Several nearby roads have been shut and people have been advised to keep their windows closed to avoid smoke.
Footage shows the large fire, sending black smoke billowing far above the neighbouring football stadium.
Following the initial response, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue services have dispatched more responders to try and tackle the blaze.
Hampshire Police said they were assisting with road closures and the local fire and rescue service asked people to avoid the area if possible whilst the fire was ongoing.
