England and Man Utd star Ella Toone has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘really nice’ gesture after she missed out on meeting her ‘inspiration’.
Toone grew up as a Man Utd fan and idolised Ronaldo, who was starring for the Red Devils when she was a young girl. The forward helped the club to win nine trophies during his six-year spell, including the Champions League.
The England star has never met the 39-year-old and when the opportunity came up to finally make that happen, things didn’t work out. However, Ronaldo did make up for it somewhat.
Speaking on the Saving Grace podcast, Toone named Ronaldo when asked who her ‘inspiration’ was growing up, then added: “I was meant to meet him and we were meant to do a shoot together but when I got there, he’d gone. I was gutted. So then they got him to send me a video.”
Asked what he said, Toone replied: “I can’t remember but it was really nice. It’s saved in the camera roll.”
Toone wears No.7 for Man Utd, just like Ronaldo did during his time at Old Trafford. She’s also become a club legend with that number on her back, no player having made more appearances or scored more goals for the Red Devils’ women’s team than Toone.
Toone is on England duty this week and will hope to help the Lionesses start their qualifying campaign for the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro in style, with Sweden their first opponents on April 5 before a short trip to face Ireland on April 9.
