In a message published on Tuesday afternoon, the Mexican president sent a short but significant message to the Honduran leader.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her gratitude to Honduran President Xiomara Castro for attending the inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday in the Aztec country.
In a message broadcast on X on Tuesday afternoon, the Mexican president highlighted the importance of the presence of Castro, who made history on January 27, 2022 by becoming the first woman to assume the highest office in the country.
Castro traveled on Sunday to attend the inauguration with his son and private secretary, Hector Zelaya.
“Xiomara Castro, President of the Republic of Honduras. Thank you,” said the first female president in the history of Mexico , who will govern for the six-year term from 2024 to 2030.
The inauguration ceremony, held in the Chamber of Deputies, brought together leaders from various Latin American countries and other regions, and marks a new chapter in Mexican politics, with a focus on regional cooperation and strengthening democracy.
The day before, Sheinbaum held a meeting with President Castro in which they discussed issues of migration, security and energy.
Who is Claudia Sheinbaum?
Claudia Sheinbaum is a Mexican scientist and politician, member of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party. She was born on June 24, 1962 in Mexico City.
She is a physicist by training, with a PhD in energy engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In addition, she has worked as a researcher on sustainability and environmental issues.
In the political arena, Sheinbaum has had a distinguished career. She was head of government of Mexico City from December 2018 to October 2023, being the first woman elected to that position.
In 2024, Sheinbaum was selected as Morena’s candidate for Mexico’s presidential elections, consolidating herself as one of the most relevant figures within the ruling party, to the point of becoming president of the Aztec country.
Sheinbaum is known for her progressive approach to social issues, such as gender equality, combating poverty and promoting renewable energy.
