Puerto Rico’s ruling New Progressive Party (PNP) filed a complaint on Tuesday against billboards with anti-community messages, for which urban singer Bad Bunny claimed responsibility , alleging that they want to silence him.
The complaint was filed by the PNP before the Office of the Electoral Comptroller against the billboard company bMedia Group for “ghost ads,” that is, those in which the person who pays for them is not identified.
“The PNP is using its power to try to silence me. What is happening with democracy?” the artist wrote on his official account on the social network X about the electoral advertisements placed on the island, which is holding general elections on November 5.
Bad Bunny also posted photos with the ads, which read ‘Whoever votes for the PNP does not love Puerto Rico’, ‘Voting for the PNP is voting for corruption’ and ‘Voting for the PNP is voting for LUMA (the company in charge of electrical transmission and the target of strong criticism for the continuous blackouts)’.
“Ad paid for by Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio. A Puerto Rican who loves Puerto Rico,” added the singer’s post, who has been involved in the electoral campaign with harsh criticism of the PNP.
He recently said that “the biggest protest” that Puerto Rico will organize will be on the day of the general elections, when it will demonstrate “against the people” who have led the island to disaster.
According to the PNP statement, “according to the definition established in Law 222-2011, as amended, such advertisements do not establish who promotes them, who pays for them, who wants to influence voters, in clear violation of applicable laws.”
The complaint requests that the Office of the Electoral Comptroller, in compliance with the duties imposed by Law 222-2011, begin an investigation process.
This process involves ceasing and desisting from publishing the advertisements identified in the complaint; the identification and disclosure of the natural or legal person who paid for the advertisements and the imposition of an administrative fine on the person who advertised these advertisements and bMedia Group.
“Those who accuse us of corruption are the real corrupt ones. These guidelines are contrary to the law and the person who pays for them is as guilty as the entity that publishes them on its screens,” denounced the secretary general of the PNP, Hiram Torres Montalvo.
In the elections, the candidates for Governor are Jenniffer González, for the PNP; Juan Dalmau, for the alliance of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC); Jesús Manuel Ortiz, of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD); and Javier Jiménez, of Proyecto Dignidad (PD).
Puerto Ricans are also called to vote on November 5 for the Resident Commissioner in Washington, legislators, senators and mayors.
