The former vice mayor of the municipality of Gracias, Lempira , in western Honduras, Mario José Cálix Hernández , alias ‘Cubeta’, will be extradited this Wednesday to the United States, a country that accuses him of drug trafficking.
Calix was transferred under a strong police operation from the National Directorate of Special Forces in Tegucigalpa to the Palmerola International Airport in Comayagua, where he will be handed over to US security agents.
The Southern District of New York requested the extradition of Cálix Hernández for his alleged links to an international criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking.
The former vice mayor was arrested in the early hours of June 21 in a mountainous area of Olancho. Following his trial in the Supreme Court of Justice, a judge approved his extradition on August 16 .
According to the indictment, Calix allegedly conspired to import large quantities of drugs into the United States, using routes originating in Colombia.
Charges against ‘Cubeta’ Calix
Calix has been charged by the New York District Attorney’s Office since 2019 with conspiracy to import a controlled substance into the United States from abroad.
He is also accused of manufacturing and distributing the substance, as well as attempting to distribute it in the United States using aircraft registered in that country.
He is also charged with the use and possession of firearms, as well as conspiracy to commit such use.
Links to drug traffickers
According to the New York District Attorney’s Office , Cálix was involved in drug trafficking from 2005 to 2016 , working with traffickers from Colombia, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico .
Testimonies from Victor Hugo Diaz Morales ‘El Rojo ‘ and Alexander ‘Chande’ Ardon Soriano closely link him to key figures in drug trafficking and Honduran politics, including that he witnessed the delivery of one million dollars from Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman to Tony Hernandez for the 2013 presidential campaign of Juan Orlando Hernandez.
