The corruption investigation relates to the deal that saw the Supercopa de Espana expanded into a four-team competition that takes place in Saudi Arabia. Rubiales is suspected of receiving illegal commissions when negotiating the transformation.
Rubiales is one of seven individuals under investigation and prosecutors are requesting a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for him. He is also facing the same sentence for sexual assault for kissing Spain women’s star Jenni Hermoso after the World Cup final last year.
Now that he has been detained, the 46-year-old will likely stand trial for the corruption charges, though it is not clear when proceedings will begin. It is also unclear when the trial for sexual assault will take place.
