The traditional Hindu wedding was going on as normal until the crucial moment arrived: the exchange of ceremonial garlands, a symbol of union between the bride and groom.
However, a confused and drunk Ravindra Kumar, 26, placed the garland around the necks of three people before reaching his bride-to-be.
The breaking point came when, in his drunken state, Kumar garlanded the bride’s best friend instead of his 21-year-old fiancée, Radha Devi.
The young woman, shocked and embarrassed, reacted immediately: she slapped her boyfriend hard and cancelled the wedding on the spot, leaving the place.
A massive brawl and an unexpected arrest
Following the bride’s decision , tensions quickly escalated between the families of both parties, who began to argue heatedly.
What began as an exchange of words turned into a collective brawl, with pushing and shouting that alerted the authorities.
Police moved in to control the situation and arrested Ravindra Kumar, accusing him of disturbing public order and violating India’s strict anti-dowry law, which prohibits the bride’s family from giving property or money to the groom as part of the marriage .
A multimillion-dollar lawsuit after the humiliation
Far from ending the scandal, the bride’s family filed a formal complaint against Kumar. They accuse him of humiliating the bride and lying about his profession to arrange the wedding.
They are also seeking financial compensation of 450,000 rupees (about $4,800) for damages to the family’s reputation and the costs of the wedding, which never took place.
