Diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, 74, is the presidential candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), the coalition that brings together the main parties and leaders of the Venezuelan opposition. The decision was made after a lengthy debate between ten political parties, who finally agreed to support González Urrutia as their standard-bearer. This consensus reflects the effort to consolidate a solid candidacy to confront the ruling party at a key moment for the country.
González also has the support of María Corina Machado and Corina Yoris, two important political figures who were blocked by Chavismo in these elections. Their support is seen as a symbol of unity and strength within the Venezuelan opposition.
Edmundo González Urrutia , 74 years old, was born on August 29, 1949 in La Victoria, Aragua state, Venezuela. He is the youngest of three siblings, son of Pascual Alfredo González Blank and Hilda Josefina Urrutia Argott. His family has historical roots, since his great-great-grandfather Wenceslao Urrutia was chancellor during the government of Julián Castro in 1858.
He completed his primary education at the Rubén Darío school group and completed his high school studies at the Liceo José Félix Ribas, both in his hometown. Later, he entered the Universidad Central de Venezuela, where he obtained his degree in international studies, marking the beginning of his diplomatic career.
In 1973, González married Mercedes López, a native of Caracas and descendant of a Venezuelan father and a Basque mother. In 1981, he expanded his academic training by completing a master’s degree in International Relations at the American University, consolidating his professional profile.
United States recognizes Edmundo Gonzalez as president-elect of Venezuela
The United States has publicly recognized Edmundo González Urrutia as the president-elect of Venezuela following the July 28 elections. This announcement marks a significant change in the official position of the North American country.
On August 1, Joe Biden’s administration recognized González Urrutia as the winner, although it avoided referring to him as president-elect until now. For its part, the National Electoral Council proclaimed the reelection of Nicolás Maduro, without publishing the detailed minutes of the results.
The main opposition alliance, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), presented documents supporting González’s victory. The opposition leader is currently in Spain, where he claims persecution by the Venezuelan authorities.
A senior Biden administration official confirmed to EFE that this is the first time the United States has officially used the term “president-elect” to refer to González Urrutia. This statement could influence the international political landscape.
