Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said Sunday that his government will deliver a $300 bonus to some 1,000 families of “small farmers” affected by the rains of Tropical Storm Sara , whose influence has left a “minimal impact” in this country.
“I have ordered the delivery of $300 vouchers to approximately 1,000 farming families, along with the distribution of 50,000 food packages for the affected families in those areas,” Bukele posted on X without giving further details.
He said that “Tropical Storm Sara has had minimal impact on our country,” but “some small farmers have lost their crops, and their workers will also face the loss of work days.”
The Civil Protection Directorate of El Salvador has declared a green alert (prevention) “due to heavy rains and storms generated by the influence of tropical storm Sara” at the national level.
While in some districts of the coastal area and the departments of San Salvador, San Miguel and La Unión a yellow alert (vigilance) was issued.
Storm Sara continues to advance toward the Yucatan Peninsula, now as a tropical depression, located on Sunday afternoon on the border between the state of Campeche, in southern Mexico, and Guatemala, causing heavy to intense rains.
Sara is the eighteenth named cyclone of the 2024 Atlantic Ocean season, forming last Thursday off the coast of Central America, leaving two dead in Honduras and more than 80,000 affected in its wake, in addition to triggering alerts in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico due to its effects.
