Embassies attacked in Kinshasa, fire in the French embassy
A demonstration in opposition to the conflict in North Kivu targeted embassies in Kinshasa. Several diplomatic representations were hit. A fire broke out in the French embassy compound.
In Congo (DRC), tension in Goma in North Kivu is extreme. It’s spilling over into Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC. Demonstrations took place this Tuesday, January 28, 2025, to denounce the situation in North Kivu and Goma. Part of the population feels that the international community is too lax. They attacked the embassies of Belgium, France, Uganda and the United States. They also attacked the Rwandan embassy, which has sent troops to support the M23 rebels against the Congolese army. In Kinshasa, however, Congolese police managed to contain the demonstrators using tear gas. No one was reported to have managed to enter the diplomatic premises, despite attempts to do so. However, projectiles were thrown and CCTV equipment destroyed. A fire, which has since been brought under control, broke out in the French embassy.
