“Ukraine can count on the European Union after the terrible Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.” So said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, on the eve of the G20 summit.
“We have seen the terrible, terrible attacks that Russia carried out against Ukraine last night,” she said Sunday in an interview with Brazil’s Globo News channel. “We will stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary. Ukraine can count on us.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the “unacceptable” Russian attack on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. “Attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international humanitarian law. Such attacks are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” Guterres said in a statement issued by his spokesman.
The Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure killed two people and caused massive material damage, just before the arrival of winter this can have dramatic consequences for the Ukrainian people.
