Russia claimed to have shot down US ATACMS missiles fired by Ukraine over the weekend and promised “retaliation” for the attack, which the Kremlin presented as a red line in the conflict.

In recent weeks, Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that he would order strikes on central Kiev in response to Ukrainian attacks with American ATACMS or British Storm Shadow missiles, a threat he has yet to carry out.

On Saturday, the Russian army said it had shot down “eight American-made ATACMS missiles” launched against the Russian region of Belgorod, bordering Ukraine, and 72 drones the previous day. Moscow’s forces didn’t specify whether this Ukrainian attack had caused any casualties or material damage.
