Francisco Lopera Restrepo , born in Santa Rosa de Osos on February 9, 1951 and died in Medellín on September 10, 2024 at the age of 73 , was a Colombian neurologist and scientist. He stood out for his research on Alzheimer’s disease; diagnosing the genes that cause the disease early and those that can prevent its onset.
In his career in neurological medicine, he conducted research and studies on the genetics and variants of Alzheimer’s disease. He discovered the paisa mutation variant , characterized by a mixture of neurodegeneration and dementia, and published his findings in the journal Nature .
In 2024, he was awarded the Potamkin Prize , awarded by the American Academy of Neurology and the American Brain Foundation, considered a Nobel for those who have dedicated themselves to neuroscience.
