As Ukraine struggles against repeated Russian attacks, a new German weapon has just appeared on the battlefield.
The information was relayed by the Kyiv Independent following the broadcast of a video by the Ukrainian Air Force. To defend its skies, Kiev is now reportedly using the Skynex system supplied by Germany. According to its manufacturer Rheinmetal, Skynex is a “networked air defense system” with “a highly effective multi-layered protective shield against a wide spectrum of air threats.” It represents “the necessary response against saturation and swarm attacks in the future .” While Rheinmetall remains vague on technical details, the Skynex model sent to the Ukrainian forces is said to have a range of 4,000 meters and could fire 1,000 rounds per minute.
In a video posted online on September 25, Ukrainian soldiers can be seen firing. “Strikes were carried out using the Skynex air defense system against various types of air targets… Everything is working without problems. Glory to Ukraine!” says a soldier.
British author and weapons expert Martin J. Dougherty explains: ” Skynex was developed to counter low-level, low-cost threats such as mortar rounds. This capability has transferred well to the emerging drone threat and may be essential to a multi-layered air defense system.”
