WHAT HAPPENED?
Kane and Mbappe shared the Gerd Muller award having scored 52 goals each in the 2023-24 campaign for club and country. On Monday at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, Kane was present in Paris to collect the prestigious award, however, Mbappe did not turn up as Real Madrid decided to boycott the awards for Vinicius Junior’s snub.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The England and Bayern Munich forward expressed his delight after receiving the prize. However, he refused to speculate on Mbappe’s absence, calling it a “personal decision”. Mbappe and Kane have picked up right where they left off last season, scoring eight and 15 goals in the 2024-25 campaign, respectively.
WHAT HARRY KANE SAID
Speaking after being presented with the award in Paris, the England captain said: “It was his personal decision not to be present. We both had a very good season and, like me, he scored 52 goals. It’s a great honour to be rewarded. We’ll have to ask him why he wasn’t there, but it’s an honour to be here tonight in any case.”
