A special unit of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s Main Intelligence Directorate has destroyed a Russian helicopter for the first time in military history.
The Russian Mi-8 helicopter was shot down on Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, using a maritime attack drone equipped with missile weapons.
“On December 31, 2024, soldiers of the special unit Group 13′ of the Ukrainian GUR Ministry of Defense, for the first time in history, hit an aerial target using a Magura V5 marine attack drone equipped with missile weapons,” Ukrainian military intelligence said in a statement.
The Black Sea has been one of the main battlefields between Russian and Ukrainian forces since the start of the conflict. Despite its theoretical naval superiority, Russia has reduced its presence in the region, to the point where the Ukrainian navy estimated on Tuesday that there was only one Russian ship left in the Black Sea, and that it had no missiles.
