Three Honduran immigrants who entered the United States illegally were arrested in Florida on Tuesday on charges of sexually abusing a 12-year-old minor.
The defendants, identified as Selvin Lopez Lopez, Erick Lopez Lopez and Jesersson Lopez Lopez, face charges of capital sexual assault and lewd conduct, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office .
Authorities believe the abuses spanned several months, between August 2024 and today. The three suspects, currently being held without bail, were previously released in the United States under the Biden-Harris administration after entering the country illegally.
Selvin and Erick Lopez entered the United States in 2021 and turned themselves in to Border Patrol, but failed to attend court hearings. Jesersson Lopez, meanwhile, entered the United States in 2023 and was scheduled to appear in court in 2028.
The surge in illegal immigration has been a controversial issue in the United States, and the Biden-Harris administration has faced criticism for its handling of the situation at the southern border. Since 2021, more than 10 million people have crossed the border, according to official estimates.
This arrest comes weeks after a similar incident on the island of Nantucket , where four illegal immigrants were arrested on suspicion of sexual crimes, two of them accused of assaulting minors.
