Badenoch, in an interview with the British media, The Spectators, sparked fresh identity controversy about her link with Nigeria, saying she identifies with Yoruba and not with the Northern part of the country.
She has nothing in common with Northern Nigeria, the leader of the UK Conservative Party said, seemingly in a jab at Nigeria’s vice president Kashim Shettim, who criticized her for remarks “denigrating Nigeria” and urged her to stop using her Nigerian name.
According to her, Northern Nigeria is a haven for Islamism and Boko Haram. She pointed out that she identifies less with Nigeria and was shocked to be recognized as such.
Speaking about her love for the UK, Badenoch recalled that her last name was associated with a warrior and a guardian of the throne, and she said she would be willing to die for the UK.
“Somebody once told me when I was very young that my surname was a name for people who were warriors. I consider myself to be doing the same thing they did, which was to protect the crown.
“I am here to protect, and I will die protecting this country because I know what’s out there.”
