Ikechebelu made the assurance while waving off meter installation, commissioning the Vending/Control Room and equipment, and signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sabrud Consortium Nigeria Limited.
He praised the task force committee for completing its job on time and promised that all facilities in the university will be metered soon.
He expressed his delight that such an event was taking place at the university for the first time.
“When I took office, I considered how to modify the nightmarish narrative regarding electricity in order to have progressive staff and kids.
“Light, water, and food are the fundamental necessities of existence. You can’t contemplate or talk about creativity and discovery on an empty stomach or in the dark.
“What started as joke is now a reality. We can now boast of audit of our electricity consumption and appropriate payment. That’s why we came up with the Light up UNIZIK mantra.
“With this development, we can now hieve sigh of relief, especially in terms of what we spend on running generators,” he said
The UNIZIK boss however charged the firm to ensure efficient service delivery to guarantee sustenance of the partnership.
“You’re lucky to have us partner with you because the university will announce your firm through our goodwill and legacy,” he added.
Earlier, the Chairman of Task Force on Electricity, Comrade Stephen Ufoaroh, thanked the Acting VC for the opportunity to serve, expressing joy that the mandate of restoring the power supply and ensuring its steadiness had been realized.
He said the choice of Sabrud Consortium Nigeria Limited from over five vendors that applied after rigorous scrutiny was informed by its quality, indigenous, and proximity advantage, especially with regards to emergencies.
He stated, “The path was not easy, but we’re delighted we reached certain milestones. We were able to limit the consumption of power at the institution, lowering wage billings.
“We’ve also raised monies to pay off debts accrued with EEDC before we joined, as well as to pay more before the end of the year.
“We are confident about having our own energy center to develop our own as well as address estimates and predictions that will entice investors.
“In the Memorandum of Understanding, we insisted on specific symbiotic links with the enterprise, particularly in terms of research and academic activity.
