International Men’s Day is celebrated every October 19, a date established in 1992 in the United States by Thomas Oaster , director of the Center for Men’s Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas , with the intention of highlighting the positive role and contributions that men make in society.
Furthermore, it is an opportunity to promote gender equality, non-violence, peace, equity, tolerance and understanding.
In Honduras, this day is not formally established by the National Congress through a specific decree and does not have legal support, as is the case with Women’s Day. It is a key day to recognize the importance of men in Honduran society.
Why is International Men’s Day celebrated?
International Men’s Day is celebrated to address issues related to men’s health, the promotion of gender equality, and to highlight the contribution of men in communities. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), through its director of the Women and Culture of Peace program, Norwegian Ingeborg Breines, showed interest in proclaiming it internationally.
Although this day is not officially classified or declared as a celebration by institutions such as the UN, more than 60 countries in North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Africa commemorate it every November 19 since 1999.
This holiday aims to reinforce important pillars such as: promoting more normalized positive male role models, recognizing men’s contributions to the family, to the care of children and also to the environment, and emphasizing men’s well-being and health, not only physically, but also mentally.
