Ukrainians consider Mr. Zelensky’s presidency to be legitimate more than six months after the scheduled end of his term, although confidence in him has declined and his potential rivals in a hypothetical election have become more active.
Fifty-two percent of Ukrainians still trust their president, according to the latest poll by the International Institute of Sociology in Kiev, compared with 77% a year ago and 59% last May, when elections would have been held but didn’t due to the war.
Regardless of their assessment of the president’s performance, the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians continue to regard his presidency as legitimate, said the institute’s director, Anton Grushetski.
“Ukrainians agree that presidential elections cannot be held for the duration of the war and that all efforts must be focused on defense,” he said.
