Jimmy Carter’s funeral will last a week

Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday, will have a full state funeral to honor his legacy and contribution to American history.

Known for his Nobel Peace Prize, Carter will be remembered in a series of solemn ceremonies that will take place over a week, beginning in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

The funeral will begin with a ceremony in Atlanta at the Carter Center. The casket will then be transported to Washington, DC, where it will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda, allowing the American people to pay tribute to the leader who left an indelible mark on the country.

Following the wake, a state service will be held at the National Cathedral, followed by a three-gun salute, a military tradition honoring those who have served the nation.

The coffin will later be transported in a carriage pulled by six horses, a custom of state funerals dating back to the 19th century.

Media outlets have reported that songs such as ” Hail to the Chief” and ” Taps ” will be played during the ceremonies, while the coffin, draped with the American flag, will be accompanied by a military escort.

As part of the traditions, an air parade will also be held in honor of the former president.

Carter’s remains will ultimately be returned to Plains, Georgia, where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife Rosalynn in a private service that will cap a series of memorials meant to celebrate his legacy.
