Following the arrest of those allegedly involved in the murder of environmentalist Juan López, the activist’s family and the Municipal Committee for the Defense of Common and Public Goods of Tocoa remain hopeful that those arrested are indeed linked to the crime and that justice will be achieved.
The lawyer for the family and the Committee, Eddy Tábora , expressed his confidence that the arrests will include those directly responsible for the homicide.
“We hope that these arrests correspond to their participation as material authors, accomplices or concealers, and that they face the legal consequences,” said Tábora.
The lawyer also expressed his interest in the actions that the Public Prosecutor’s Office will take, and was awaiting whether formal charges would be filed against the detainees.
However, he clarified that the information he has is limited and comes from public sources.
Tábora stressed that, although the capture of the alleged perpetrators represents an important step forward, it is not enough to satisfy the demand for justice from the family and the organizations involved.

The Honduran Public Prosecutor’s Office, through the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Life (FEDCV), has filed a criminal complaint against Óscar Alexi Guardado Alvarenga, Daniel Antonio Juárez Torres and Lenin Adonis Cruz Munguía, accused of the murder of human rights defender and environmentalist Juan Antonio López.
The courts are preparing the hearing for the statements of the accused detainees.
The request was filed this Sunday, October 6, in the Court of First Instance with National Jurisdiction over Organized Crime, Environment and Corruption in San Pedro Sula, Cortés.
According to the investigation, Guardado Alvarenga met with the other two defendants before the attack, where he was provided with a motorcycle that was used in the crime.
Guardado Alvarenga then monitored the victim before shooting him, resulting in his immediate death in the Fabio Ochoa neighborhood of Tocoa.
