Leftist Yamandú Orsi , from the opposition Frente Amplio and successor of former President José “Pepe” Mujica , won the second round of the presidential elections in Uruguay on Sunday , according to projections released by television stations.
Orsi has 49.0% of the votes, while the candidate of the ruling National Party, Álvaro Delgado, has 46.6% , according to Channel 10 based on data from Equipos Consultores.
According to Channel 12, which cited the pollster Cifra, Orsi obtained 49.5% of the votes, against 45.9% for Delgado.
However, these are projections of votes, not official results, since the Electoral Court of Uruguay has not yet provided partial results of the vote count.
The new president of Uruguay will govern the country between March 1, 2025 and March 1, 2030.
A total of 2,727,120 Uruguayans were eligible to vote at 7,225 polling stations for the second round of the presidential elections, which opened at 8:00 a.m. local time.
