Neighbor discovers billing error and realizes he’s been paying for someone else’s electricity for nearly 2 decades.
A Solano County resident in the United States experienced an unusual situation after discovering that he had been paying his neighbor’s electricity bills for almost two decades.
Ken Wilson , who had been trying for years to reduce his electricity usage, discovered it was all due to a billing error by the utility company Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).
Wilson , concerned about the high electricity bills he was receiving month after month, decided to implement a series of measures to reduce the cost of his electricity consumption.
She tried to improve her usage habits, adjusted the way she used her appliances and even bought a device to measure her home’s electricity consumption. However, despite her efforts , the bills were still excessively high, which sparked her frustration.
With no results, Wilson decided to contact the electric company, PG&E, to investigate the cause of the high charges on his bills. The company sent an inspector to the site to check the meter and try to identify the problem.
Wilson told local media that even after turning off all the switches in his house, the meter continued to register consumption , something that seemed inexplicable to him.
Billing error
Eventually, the inspector discovered that Wilson’s meter was connected to another apartment. According to PG&E records, the billing error had been going on for at least 15 years, though Wilson suspects it had been going on since he moved in 2006, indicating he had been paying for his neighbor ‘s electricity for 18 years.
Despite discovering the mistake, Wilson will have to wait until the next billing period for the company to make the adjustment and start paying only for his electricity consumption.
The company can’t make the change right away, which means you’ll continue to pay your neighbor’s bill for a while longer.
