Barcelona have reportedly contacted Manchester United for the potential transfer of Mason Greenwood following his impressive loan spell at Getafe.
According to Sport, Barcelona view Greenwood as a cost-effective option for the upcoming transfer window, considering the club’s current financial challenges. The Catalan giants admire Greenwood’s versatility as the forward can slot in the left wing and also through the middle. While Barcelona has yet to make any firm commitments due to uncertainty surrounding their summer budget, they have reached out to United to assess Greenwood’s availability and the financial package that would be required to get him.
Despite the off-field controversies, Greenwood has thrived at Getafe contributing eight goals and five assists in all competitions this season. Although Sir Jim Ratcliffe hinted at the possibility of Greenwood returning to Old Trafford in the summer, it is understood that the Premier League club is more inclined to execute a permanent sale – with the player also keen on continuing in Spain rather than rekindling his relationship with the Red Devils.
With Greenwood’s current United contract expiring in 2025, his market value will decrease as he enters the final year of his deal which should further encourage Barcelona to pursue the English player. Additionally, the Catalan club may explore the option of including promising young talents from their academy to reduce the transfer fee, leveraging United’s interest in La Masia prospects.
Barcelona are currently awaiting further clarity from La Liga on its quest to comply with the Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations over the next few weeks. In the meantime, the club will continue to assess potential transfer targets.
