According to Danish TV 2, since 2022, almost 16,000 Russian soldiers have resigned.

For Russia, military disobedience is a violation of the law, for which the country has introduced tougher sanctions since autumn 2022.

Of these almost 16,000 cases, 14,182 have resulted in a trial and 12,460 in a conviction.

In most cases soldiers are accused of leaving their unit without permission, and this offence is considered more of a minor offence than the offence of desertion, because it’s easier to prove in court.

The penalty for desertion has increased from five to ten years’ imprisonment, while the maximum sentence has been raised to 15 years. However, many of these sentences are conditional on soldiers being sent back to the front line.
