The La Laguna sector in Tegucigalpa was the scene of a violent armed exchange between the Military Police of Public Order (PMOP) and members of a criminal structure on Wednesday night.
The operation resulted in a tragic toll of deaths, injuries and multiple arrests.
The confrontation began around 11:00 pm, when military agents carried out an operation after obtaining information that several armed individuals from a criminal organization were present at the wake of a gang member killed the night before.
The group’s objective, according to preliminary reports, was to transport the body of the deceased from a community center, which led to an exchange of gunfire with the uniformed officers.
Battlefield and tragic outcome
The shooting left two dead: a military officer, identified as Darwin Rolando Lobo Lobo , originally from Olancho, and an alleged gang member who has not yet been identified.
Three people were also injured, including two military police officers and a citizen who was near the confrontation.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of five members of the criminal structure, from whom high-caliber weapons were seized.
Authorities reported that they continue to carry out raids to completely dismantle this criminal organization.
Area under permanent control
To prevent further civilian casualties, the main road connecting to Cerro Grande was closed to traffic while operations were underway.
The Military Police said that the area will remain under siege indefinitely, with the aim of capturing more members of this and other criminal structures operating in the area.
“We deeply regret the loss of one of our brave officers and assure that operations will continue until security is restored to this sector,” said a PMOP spokesperson .
