WHAT HAPPENED?

Salah moved to Anfield back in 2017, as Merseyside giants returned the former Chelsea winger to English football. He has been a revelation for the Reds, helping them to Premier League and Champions League titles while registering 214 goals through 353 appearances.

    WHAT JOHNSON SAID

The 32-year-old is into the final 12 months of his current deal and has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League on a regular basis. Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has told Betfred of the speculation surrounding Salah and his fellow contract rebels Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold: “I believe Mo will leave and the other two will stay. Each of them are going to have an endless list of clubs that will want to sign them if they’re available as a free agent and if Liverpool know that any of them aren’t going to sign a new contract, then I believe they’ve been foolish to not cash in. You can’t have players of their calibre walking out on a free.”

    • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Johnson added when asked about what is next for Salah: “It depends because Mo still has an awful lot to give. He doesn’t play as if he’s 32 years old, so you assume as long as he feels right, that he can continue to play at this level for a couple more years, so you hope a move to Saudi Arabia isn’t of interest to him right now. If he’s available on a free at the end of the season, then there’ll be a list of exciting clubs all waiting to sign him.”

      DID YOU KNOW?

If Salah were to depart next summer, then Liverpool would require cover on their right flank. Euro 2020 winner Federico Chiesa may help to fill that void, or the Reds could dip into the transfer market. Johnson said of what happens next: “You don’t want Mo to leave, but with Chiesa there already and if Eberechi Eze was also to come in next summer, then they’d both be very good options if Mo departs.”

      WHAT NEXT?

England international Eze, who is currently on the books of Crystal Palace, is said to be a player registering on Liverpool’s recruitment radar. They should have funds to spend in 2025 after new boss Arne Slot oversaw a quiet summer during his first window at the helm.
