Biography of Monica del Raval
Born Ramona Coronado García in Villamanrique , Mónica del Raval was born in Spain, exactly in Ciudad Real , on February 16, 1964 , and was 60 years old . Her life was marked by resilience and authenticity, which made her an iconic character in the Raval neighborhood.
Her life story is widely known, as she was a woman who dedicated herself to prostitution for half of her life, leading a life so controversial that it even inspired a documentary in her name which was very well known.
What was Monica’s career path?
Monica began working as a prostitute on her own initiative at the age of 18 in Madrid, specifically on Ballesta Street. However, it was in Barcelona where she really left her mark.
For more than 30 years , she became a well-known figure, not only for her work, but also for her unique style, which included colourful make-up and a characteristic plastic crown. Her life was portrayed in the documentary ‘Mónica del Raval’, directed by Francesc Betriu in 2009, which helped to consolidate her fame.
What impact did it have on popular culture?
Mónica del Raval became an icon. She appeared on television shows, recorded songs, participated in music videos, had cameos in films and it is worth noting that a book was also written in her name called ‘Décollage. Mónica del Raval como vanguardismo’ written by Javier Moralope, where he expresses that the woman “spoke about prostitution in a totally free way, she wanted to be the owner and mistress of everything.”
He was a regular figure at Barcelona’s night parties. On the streets of the Raval, he would offer his own film and sell calendars with his images during the times when he received fewer calls from the clubs.
However, it was not until 2015 at the age of 51 that she decided to retire from prostitution, to which she claimed to have been with more than 80,000 men during her career.
Despite his fame, he always maintained a humble and sincere attitude, becoming a reference for many.
What health problems did he face and why did he die?
Since 2018, she was hospitalized and in a vegetative state after suffering a heat stroke that caused a stroke. After being paralyzed for 6 years, she died. Historian Javier Morelope, a close friend of the Spaniard, expressed on social media during that time: ” She has had a really bad time. Horrible. She has endured a lot of pain , multiple hospital admissions, and her last moments have been tremendous.”

Her legacy lives on not only in the streets of Raval, where she became famous, but also in the collective memory as an indomitable woman who defended her profession with pride.
