Mexican guitarist Javier Bátiz, a pioneer of national rock and teacher of Carlos Santana, died this Saturday at the age of 80 due to complications from pneumonia and after battling prostate cancer.
The artist died in the city of Tijuana, on the border with the United States.
His wife, Claudia Madrid, confirmed his death in a message on social media, along with a photo in which they are seen young and smiling.
“Dear friends and family. I want to let you know that our beloved and beloved husband, Javier Bátiz, passed away today. His legacy and his music will live on forever. I love you, my love! Fly high, my angel!” she shared.
A close relative told EFE that the cause of death was respiratory complications resulting from pneumonia, which is why he was hospitalized for several days prior to his death.
In recent months, Bátiz had been battling serious health problems due to pneumonia, in addition to suffering from prostate cancer.
The legendary guitarist had a musical career spanning more than 60 years. He was born on June 3, 1944 in Tijuana and in 1957 he founded the group ‘Los TJs’, with musical influences received in the Mexican border cities.
He is known for being the founder of the rock movement in Tijuana and for having been a mentor to other great artists such as Carlos Santana and Alex Lora.
Last November, the musician was honored with the keys to the border city, for his legacy and his long career.
On that occasion, Bátiz attended the event where he appeared very moved and, with his peculiar sense of humor, thanked everyone for having him “in mind” and considered the distinction as “the highest honor.” EFE
