According to Le Monde, following Donald Trump’s victory in the US election, discussions have resumed. In particular, Paris and London could lead a foreign military contingent.
Over the summer, French President, Emmanuel Macron, had suggested that NATO forces could be deployed to support Ukraine. This proposal sparked off a wide-ranging debate among the allies. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Canada have said they’re ready to discuss options.
According to sources, the debate is classified, but discussion of the possible deployment of regular troops and private military companies has intensified.
Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, has stated that the position hasn’t changed and that London has no intention of sending troops to Ukraine.
The idea of European troops is likely to be included in Trump’s plan. According to The Telegraph, the new American president could ask the European Union and the UK to send troops to secure a buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia along the demarcation line if a truce is reached.
