WHAT HAPPENED?

Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus quelled excitement surrounding Neymar’s return last month when he said his condition would be assessed in January, despite the Brazilian appearing to suggest his comeback was imminent by posting several training videos on social media. However, the 32-year-old has made ‘significant improvement’ in his recovery, according to ESPN Brasil, and he could be ready to play for the Saudi Pro League side on October 21.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It’s been a hellish year for Neymar, who tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee while playing for Brazil 12 months ago. But the end may be in sight, with people close to the forward believing he could play against Al-Ain in the Asian Champions League next week. It’s also great news for Brazil, who are hopeful of having Neymar available for their World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Uruguay in November.

    • DID YOU KNOW?

Neymar will be itching to make up for lost time but his return hinges on the opinions of Jesus, who will have the final say on when he plays again, and Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, who carried out the former Barcelona and PSG star’s surgery and will shortly travel to Saudi Arabia to assess his fitness.

Neymar made only five appearances for Al-Hilal before getting hurt but he may not have to wait much longer for his sixth. Given his extraordinary talent, his return will excite football fans around the world.
