Nigerian army arrests terrorist kingpin seeking to set up base in Taraba
Officers of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Taraba state have arrested a terrorist kingpin identified as Gambo Grema, at Mai-Hula town, in Bali Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
The spokesperson of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, Captain Oni Olubodunde, revealed that he was captured on Monday, January 26.
He noted that Grema who was captured on in Mai-Hula town, located in the Bali LGA of Taraba State, was deployed by the terrorists to establish new camps in the state.
Olubodunde stated that the troops tracked the terror suspect to his hideout in Mai-Hula town, following reliable intelligence.
He also mentioned that Grema, also known as Gamboi, confessed to being part of a group involved in kidnappings for ransom to finance terrorism.
Olubodunde said, “The gallant troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have recorded another milestone in their relentless efforts to ensure peace and security in Taraba State.
“Acting on actionable intelligence, on 26 January 2025, troops successfully tracked and apprehended a suspected member of the Boko Haram Terrorist group, identified as Gambo Grema, also known as Gamboi, in Mai-Hula town, Bali Local Government Area.
“During preliminary investigations, the suspect confessed to being part of a syndicate deployed by Boko Haram to Taraba State.
“Their mission was to engage in kidnapping for ransom as a means of financing their terrorist operations and to establish a new cell within the state.
“The suspect further revealed that the syndicate also harbored members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) who were deployed from the Timbuktu Triangle to carry out other criminal activities.”
Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, stated that the operation highlighted the Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS’s commitment to eliminating terrorist threats.
He also emphasized that the Army remains dedicated to safeguarding the lives and property of Taraba State residents and others.
“Members of the public should continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing operations,” Uwa said.
