In the last few hours, the name of Osiel Cárdenas has been heavily searched on the web, after the United States government deported the drug lord to Mexico. Authorities deported the drug trafficker on Monday, December 16, from the United States, where he was serving half of a 25-year sentence. However, Mexican authorities confirmed that they transferred Cárdenas to the Altiplano prison, where he faces three charges: organized crime, crimes against health and money laundering.
He arrived in the United States from Mexico in January 2007, a few months after President Felipe Calderón took office and began a series of legal actions and operations against drug cartels.
Who is Osiel Cardenas?
One of the most notorious drug traffickers in Mexican history, Cardenas led the Gulf Cartel. He presided over some of the bloodiest gang violence in Mexico’s turbulent past and transformed the drug trade by adopting hyper-violent tactics.
He founded the Zetas, an armed wing of the Gulf Cartel made up of former members of the army’s special forces. He was captured after a shootout in 2003, extradited to the United States in 2007 and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2010.
The Zetas later disbanded and for a time became Mexico’s most dangerous criminal group before their demise.
