The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro , sent her condolences this Sunday to her Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum , for the death of the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico, Ifigenia Martínez , who passed away on the night of Saturday, October 5, at the age of 94.
Through his X social media account, Castro remembered Ifigenia Martínez as an ” illustrious fighter ” and “Latin American woman who is an example of perseverance and struggle .”
“President Sheinbaum, our deepest condolences for the death of the distinguished fighter Ifigenia Martínez y Hernández , president of the Board of Directors of the Mexican Chamber of Commerce, a Latin American woman who is an example of perseverance and struggle. Our solidarity with her family and friends ,” wrote the Honduran president.
Career of Ifigenia Martinez
Despite her health problems – she used a wheelchair and oxygen – Martínez attended Sheinbaum’s inauguration last Tuesday, October 1, where outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador first handed her the presidential sash, which she passed on to Sheinbaum and placed on her.
Martínez, along with the aforementioned Cárdenas and Muñoz Ledo (1933-2023), founded the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in 1989, which recently lost its registration.
She studied economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and was one of the main participants in the student movement of 1968.
She was also co-founder of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and won the national prize for Economics.
Deputy and Senator
As a politician, she served as a federal deputy on several occasions and has been a senator twice.
In addition, on October 5, 2021, the Mexican Senate approved awarding the Belisario Domínguez medal to Martínez (Mexico City, 1930) “for his relevant and significant career,” according to Dante Delgado, Senate coordinator of Movimiento Ciudadano.
Martínez was the seventh woman to receive the highest civil distinction awarded by the Senate since the recognition was established in 1954.
Last August, by majority vote, Ifigenia Martínez was elected as the president of the Board of Directors for the first year of legislative exercise; and for this reason, she was the one who handed the presidential sash to Sheinbaum.
This Monday, the Chambers of Deputies and Senators will hold a general session of Congress to pay tribute to Martínez in the legislative palace of San Lázaro.
