Since Trump’s re-election, there have been talks between several countries about bolder support for Ukraine, including the arrival of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory, although no public decision has yet been made.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has called on the West to consider options for troops to protect Ukrainian-controlled territory from another Russian invasion after a peace deal.
Margus Tsahkna says: “I don’t think President Trump is interested in a weak ceasefire, because then Russia would remain a threat.”
And he clarifies about Putin: “He’s an old man and he knows that he’s fighting for his life. So it’s not easy for him to stop the war machine that he has built. It’s based on fear in his own society. It’s based on a war economy.”
On peace talks, he says: “If President Zelensky feels that all Western partners are pushing him to conclude to a peace agreement, that’s not a very strong position. I fully agree with the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, who said that we should not push Ukraine to peace talks if we see that Putin hasn’t changed his goal.”
