Rebeca Cheptegei was born in Bukwo District, Uganda on 22 February 1991 and passed away in Eldoret, Kenya on 5 September 2024. Her father is Joseph Cheptegei and she was a mother of two children.
She had a long-term relationship with Dickson Ndiema , who was responsible for her death by causing her severe injuries. He also suffered burns on 30% of his body; however, he is out of danger.

She began her career in 2010 in the under-20 category at the World Cross Country Championships , where she finished in 15th place. She also competed in middle-distance events such as the 800 and 1500 metres .
A year later, she was already competing at senior level, finishing second in the Madrid half marathon . She also took third place in the 1500 metres at the Military Games in Rio de Janeiro , representing the Ugandan Armed Forces .
