Far-right Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene , chosen to lead a subcommittee that will work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in a future Donald Trump administration , warned that “sanctuary ” states and cities for immigrants could lose their funding.
In an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Greene explained that these areas will have to explain to this subcommittee, which will work hand in hand with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, leaders of DOGE, why they deserve to be funded.
“I would like to speak to the governors of sanctuary states and the mayors of sanctuary cities to appear before our committee and explain why they deserve federal dollars if they are going to harbor illegal criminals in their states and cities,” said the congresswoman.
Which cities are in the spotlight?
Sanctuary cities and states, such as New York, Los Angeles, and Washington DC, are those that limit collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Greene said that if these areas “use their police and their resources to harbor and protect illegal alien criminals , then they risk losing their federal funding, and rightly so.”
In order to cut public spending, he stressed that it is necessary to “cut programs, subsidies, contracts, employees… everything that is failing the American people and does not serve their interests.”
This initiative is not new. During his first term in office (2017-2021), Trump withheld security funds from cities like Los Angeles, which ultimately won the battle with the federal government by going to court.
Greene also said that government-funded media programs, such as public radio network NPR, “that broadcast nothing but Democratic propaganda,” will be closely monitored by the subcommittee.
He also referred to government officials who have been working from home since the pandemic: “We have thousands of buildings that the federal government pays for with more than 15 billion dollars a year that have been left empty.”
