    WHAT HAPPENED?

De Jong’s situation at Barcelona has been one embroiled in much discussion and criticism since his move to Camp Nou from Ajax for a reported fee of €86 million (£71.7m/$96m) back in 2019. Last week, the Dutchman shot back at all the criticism targeted towards himself as he cleared up the wage figures thrown around by Spanish media. De Jong’s future at Barcelona is still uncertain and with his contract set to run out in 2026, claims are still being made over his future.

    • THE BIGGER PICTURE

As per Football Espana and Matteo Moretto, Barcelona have reportedly placed a certain contract renewal option on the table for the last few months and De Jong has been made aware of the same. However, the Dutchman still hasn’t responded to the new deal and the club remain in the dark over whether De Jong is unsure about remaining with Barcelona, or whether the new offer is unacceptable.

        DID YOU KNOW?

Moretto had also revealed in The Daily Briefing earlier, that the new De Jong contract offer, made by Joan Laporta and Deco, has lower wages compared to his current wage structure, however, it is still relatively higher than what the Catalan side’s economic situation might allow.

      • WHAT NEXT FOR DE JONG?

The Dutchman has been out injured for close to six months now and has missed the entire start of the season so far under Hansi Flick. However, De Jong could take part in Barcelona’s next league game against Alaves on Sunday, October 6.
