Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed his government and Sberbank, Russia’s largest state-controlled bank, to collaborate with China to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology capable of competing with the United States.
In a statement published on the Kremlin’s official website, the president emphasized that these entities should “ensure further cooperation with the People’s Republic of China in technological research and development in the field of artificial intelligence.”
China is among the world’s leaders in AI development, and with its support, Russia could gain access to AI-driven weaponry that might be deployed in Ukraine.
Since the imposition of Western sanctions following the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has been unable to access AI-powered technologies.
A significant challenge for Moscow is its inability to obtain microchips, which are essential for the Kremlin’s efforts to develop new technologies for use on the battlefield.
