After depriving Moldavia of gas, Russia has also placed the pro-Russian pro-independence region of Transnistria in an energy crisis. According to Tiraspol, Moscow will supply this self-proclaimed state with humanitarian gas.
On January 1, 2025, the Kremlin decided to cut off gas supplies to Moldova via Ukraine. Moscow invoked an allegedly colossal debt, contested by the small country bordering Romania and Ukraine. Part of its eastern territory is beyond the control of the Moldovan capital. Transnistria has declared itself independent, and is allied with Russia, which is supposed to protect it. However, it has been hard hit by the end of gas supplies. To help the population under Tiraspol’s control, the Kremlin will deliver “humanitarian gas”, according to Vadim Krasnoselsky, the leader of the Moscow-backed separatists. Technical assistance will also be provided. This is the result of negotiations between Transnistria and the Russian Ministry of Energy.
Not for Chisinau
The rest of Moldova, on the other hand, is unlikely to benefit from further Russian deliveries. The Moldovan state has declared a state of emergency. Energy savings are in force. This also applies to electricity, which was produced by a private company in the large gas-fired power station at Kuciurgan in Transnistria. Nevertheless, Moldova, a candidate for EU membership, can count on aid from Romania, unlike Transnistria. Chisinau, the Moldovan capital, is working to find other sources of supply. It also accuses Russia of wanting to “militarize” energy flows to destabilize the region and try to break up the pro-Ukrainian coalition.
